Bad Ends for Bad Boys

Many, many years ago I had a crush on a boy.  We were in sixth grade and he was beginning to earn his bad boy status, which only made him more attractive to me, a good girl.  I knew he would never notice me, but privately I yearned for him to like me back.

He never did.  I went on being a good girl and he went on being a bad boy.

And then I ran into him last week.  I took a friend of mine out for ice cream to celebrate her graduation from BYU.  This old crush of mine stood behind the counter, serving the ice cream.

Uh...

Talk about disillusioning.

It's much nicer to remember an old crush nostalgically as the bad boy who (thankfully) never liked me back, not as the thirty-something ice cream server.

Has this ever happened to any of you?  Running into an old flame in an awkward place or situation?  Or am I the only one that things like this happen to?

  1. Now I'm dying to know who this is!

Most of my truly embarrassing crushes I haven't seen for years, thankfully.

  2. Yikes. That's pretty funny though. You've got to find a man who knows how to work, I've told the young women many times.

  3. Draeves--I hope you run into some of them sometime when I'm around to watch and laugh. :)

Kelly--I completely agree and I have to say, I'm so grateful my tastes have changed! My husband has a Ph.D. and is a very hard worker. Thanks for commenting!

  4. The older sister of the guy I crushed on through high school (in fact, the guy everyone crushed on through high school) found me recently and I checked out her blog. Most of it was pictures of her adorable kids, but there was one picture of her brother and I did a double take. "Him? I wasted all those tears for unrequited love on HIM?" So weird to see how people turn out a decade or two later.

  5. That's a great story! It is so interesting to see how people change--and to realize how much time we wasted on silly crushes. Thanks for reading!

  6. I haven't run into any old flames-yet. I know it will happen when I'm grungy and unshowered, sporting my work-in-the-yard clothes and dirt under my fingers, while I dash into Walmart for a missing ingredient of the dinner I left cooking on the stove. Yup, that is when it will happen, cause that's my kind of luck. Then he'll be thinking, Ug. I liked her? Dodged a bullet that time.

  7. Leisha--I am rather surprised that I was dressed and had make-up on. I did have all the kids with me, so that should make up for some of that.

    Kanishk--I'm glad you enjoyed it.
